Unboxing

The box of the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR is what we expect and see very often from Xiaomi. Simple white with a photo of the product on the front of the box. At the back we find the specs (in Chinese) and on the sides (also Chinese) we find features and the Mijia logo.

First thing we see when we open the box, is the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR. I like the design but the camera lens is a bit big. For a dashcam that is not a problem at all since it will stay on your window after the installation.

The other items in the box are:

  • 90° angled micro USB Cable
  • USB Car Charger
  • Pry bar
  • Mount with double sided tape
  • Spare double sided tape
  • 2 x Electrostatic films
  • Manual in Chinese

Hardware & Design

The Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR is a little bit big for a dashcam, but that is fine by me. It will stay in one place and not move around that much. You really see that the focus is on the quality of the video captures. The lens in the pride in the middle of this dashcam and that is how it is suppose to be. A dashcam does not have to look fancy or with all kind of extra, unnecessary features on it. Just a good camera that is capturing my journeys.

It feels quite heavy which gives it also a premium feeling. You have the feeling that it is a super expensive camera.

Software & Settings

It is very easy to change the language to English (see the “Change Language to English” menu), but if you want to keep it in Chinese, here is the translation of the Chinese menu headings:

How to set up the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR?

When you turn on the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR, you will have to set the date and year, this is for insurance purposes. When that is done, you will see the video straight away. That is basically it. Place an SD card in there and the video is captured automatically.

When you set the language to English, everything is in English. This makes the navigation through the menu’s way easier and let you explore all the options the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR has to offer.

Change Language to English

It is really simple to change the language of the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR. You have to download THIS file from dropbox. Unpack the .ZIP file and place the file (SD_CarDV.bin) in the root of the SD card of your Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR. Restart the dashcam and it will update the firmware now with the English version!

Video Quality

The Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR is able to capture some really good and smooth video’s of you driving around. It has a steady view and it is in really good quality. Also the audio during the drive is good, but can be a bit loud. It does not matter if it is day or night time, raining or sunny, the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR is capturing it all really well.

I tried to capture all different kind of footage to show you, please enjoy the good quality video’s taken with the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR in Amsterdam:

Features

There are some features that we need on a dashcam, luckily the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR has all the features that we expect. Let’s have a look at some of the features:

Loop Recording

If you place a 64GB SD card in the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR. it will keep capturing even if the 64GB is full. How? It will delete the oldest taken video and take a new one on the freed space. This is super handy! If you take a long ride, you don’t have to delete the video’s when the 64GB SD card is full. What happens to the captured data if you have a accident and don’t turn off the camera? That is the G-Sensor, let’s have a look at that!

G-Sensor

This is a sensor that saves the recording in a different folder if a accident is recorded. A G-Sensor in a dash cam will monitor the proper acceleration, or the G-Force. In other words, the dash camera will detect a sudden change in direction. This could be caused by hard braking, impact from crashing, or even movement when stationary i.e. someone rocking the vehicle. When a dash camera detects this change in direction it will automatically switch to ‘event mode’ and save the current segment of footage in a protected section of memory. This section will not be deleted or overwritten by new data.

Auto Power-On

When the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR is connected to your car and you turn on your car, the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR will automatically turn on. This way you can “hide” the dashcam or place it somewhere where it is not super easy to access. You will always capture the data, since it will automatically turn on. How to video the captures video? Video Watching

I can image that you want to view your captured video sometimes. You don’t have to take the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR and place the 64GB SD card card in your computer, but you can view the captured video’s on the Xiaomi Mi Home app or the Mi Dash Cam app. Make sure that the Xiaomi Miji Car DVR is turned on, connect to the WiFi network that the Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR is sending and access and download the required video. Super easy and a real nice feature!

Conslusion

The Xiaomi Mijia Car DVR is a decent dashcam which captures some really good videos. You can use the images to proof you are right or just to show the stupid people around you. Only the Chinese menu is very annoying for people who live outside of China and do not speak the language. You can get the English firmware on there, but it takes some time and technical skills to do that.

Besides that, the camera has a pretty large lens. Maybe that is needs to capture the 1080P videos, which it does really well. Just to monitor the surrounding and capture any accident, this is a really good dashcam. There are other options available which are cheaper but you see a difference in video quality. For the price you pay for this dashcam, the quality is really good.
