The Xiaomi Redmi 2S looks really nice! With the dual AI power camera, you must be able to shoot some really good pictures, right? Are you taking a lot of selfies? There is also an AI powered 16MP camera on front!
Introduction
We are always looking for the latest tech. With the Xiaomi Redmi 2S we have the AI powered camera’s, which is something we will see a lot more in the future. We of course have the Huawei P20 Pro and the Huawei P20 Lite, which both have AI powered camera’s. Now Xiaomi has a smartphone that has that same feature as well. In my full review I will go into the camera performance, now let’s have a look at the hardware!
Hardware & Design
Xiaomi put a Snapdragon 625 in there, which we see a lot in Xiaomi devices. There is a 5.99″ screen with a 18:9 aspect ratio. On the back we have the fingerprint scanner and the dual AI powered camera. It has a 12MP and a 5MP camera on the back and on the front we have a 16MP AI powered selfie camera.
Unfortunally Xiaomi made the back of the Redmi 2S from plastic, which gives it a cheap feeling right away. Even though it looks like metal, it is just plastic. Also there is a Micro-USB port on there, instead of the newer USB-C. I do hear some people complain about the network lines on the back, but I like them. It give it a little extra touch and it looks cool.
First Impression
I really like the size of the smartphone. Even with the 5.99″ screen, it is easy to hold. The Xiaomi Redmi 2S unlocks really fast with the fingerprint scanner, which is really nice. It is located on a good spot and it goes almost naturally when you pick up the smartphone.
The software itself feels good and fast. I did not experience a freeze or something like that. The camera opens quickly and has takes some good pictures and selfies. We always have to consider the price of the Xiaomi Redmi 2S, which is less then €155!
Overall the first impression is really good, but it has some points where I think Xiaomi made a wrong decision.

Camera
I tried taking a normal photo, a depth photo and a selfie. It looks really good, specially the selfie. I can zoom in and really see the details. The depth photo turned out great as well. Even though the specifications are not special and are comparable to the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus or the Xiaomi Mi A1, the camera is very good! Here are the pictures taken:
Benchmark Tests
The daily usage itself gives a better overview of the performance, but that will be discussed in the full review. Here are some benchmark test restults:
AnTuTu BenchMark
With the AnTuTu BenchMark, we score an amazing 77973 points! This is a very good score for a device for this price.
PC Mark
With the PC Mark test we get a 4751 points, which is not bad at all if you ask me.
What To Expect?
In the full review of the Xiaomi Redmi 2S we will go deeper in the specifications, the performance and the camera and video quality. For now the first impression is really good, only the plastic back is something that I hoped to see different. There are big bezels on top and bottom of the Xiaomi Redmi S2, but seen the price of this device, you can’t get it all. It misses the USB-C charger, instead it has a Micro-USB port. I rather see USB-C become the standard on Xiaomi smartphones.
