Review: BlitzWolf BW-SHP2 – Cheap Well Performing Smart Socket

Everything is getting more expensive, like the energy bill. How can you reduce it? Using smart electronics! I’ve replaced all my lights in my house and I placed some smart sockets to monitor my energy usage and possibly make some changes in how I use everything. Maybe I will save some money doing so! Let’s have a look at the BlitzWolf BW-SHP2 and how this device can help you save money.

Introduction & Specifications

What can you expect from a smart socket? It has to be easy to control, it must give an insight into your usage and the design must be good. Luckily, the BlitzWolf BW-SHP2 scores high on all these requirements. The app, Smart Life, is easy, looks good and makes it very easy to control the sockets (on Android). There is a clear overview of the usage and the design is good! It is not too bulky, like some other smart sockets on the market. The material is fireproof, which is good to know! This will make it way safer to use. If there is a power defect, at least you know it won’t cause a fire in your house.

Unboxing

BlitzWolf has some unique packaging. The green on top and at the bottom and the white in the middle with the model name jumps out and it is easily recognizable as a BlitzWolf product. There are minor specifications on the back, but I love the simple but consistent design of the packaging.

Opening the BlitzWolf BW-SHP2, we find a customer satisfaction card inside. Here you can share your feeling about the product and there is a manual.

Of course, the other thing in there is the socket, and that is it! There is nothing more inside. This is a good thing! BlitzWolf does not waste paper/plastic with useless stuff inside the packages. Only the basics and I hope other companies will do this too in the near future.

Hardware & Design

The socket is not super huge, which is a good thing! The button, power on/off, is on one of the sides and not on top, which I like. This makes it even smaller if we compare it to the smart socket of TP-Link. The materials used feel good and, again, BlitzWolf made a solid and premium feeling product for an affordable price. I pressed the button a few times, and it clicked easily without having to press too hard on the BlitzWolf BW-SHP2. I only did it to feel the button, in use I only turn it on or off via Google Assitant or the Smart Life app.

Features

In the app, I use the Smart Life (more on the app below), you can control the socket. There are different things you can do with the socket:

– Turn it on/off
– Set up a schedule
– Use a timer to turn on/off
– See the usage (per month)
– Google Assistant/Alexa is available

All these options give you the great ability to control your house and the BlitzWolf BW-SHP2 just as you like. If you want something on when you arrive home at a specific time every day, this is possible with the schedule. If you want something to turn off after an hour, you can do that with the timer.

At the end of the month, you can easily see which device uses the most energy and maybe, if you want, use it less to save money. This gives you a great overview of the devices that use the most and where you can save money from.

Software

There are two apps (possibly more) that you can use with the BlitzWolf BW-SHP2. One of them is the BlitzWolf app, which I did not use. It is recommended to use the Smart Life app, and that is the one I used for this review too.

Once you find the app in the App/Play store, you have to download it (Dúh!) and open it to register. This can be done via mail or via your phone number.

Once you are logged in, you can set up your current location. Why? On the home screen, it will show you the current temperature, air pressure, and humidity at the time of opening. Handy but not a requirement. To add your BlitzWolf BW-SHP2 to the Smart Life app, you have to press the “+” sign in the top right corner.

In the next screen, you have to select what kind of device you want to add. In this case, we are going to add an “Electrical Outlet”. Press the top option and follow the steps that follow. At the WiFi screen, make sure it is connected to a 2.4GHz WiFi network. A 5GHz network is not supported. Log in with the details of the WiFi network and the connection will be made automatically.

Now that the socket is available, you can set it up just how you like. Turn it on with the timer or set up a schedule and make your house more efficient and smarter!

Google Assistant Connection

If you have a Google Home or a Google Home Mini, you can make the connection with Smart Life. This means that you can control the socket with your voice and Google Assistant! All you have to do is log in with your account details of the Smart Life (Smart Life is a supported and connected app in the list of available apps) on the Google Home app (to make the connection) and you can add the socket in the desired room. Name them correctly so you know which socket is located where.

Conclusion

The BlitzWolf BW-SHP2 offer an affordable alternative for other smart sockets on the market, for example, the TP-Link ones. The app (Smart Life) might look a little bit less fancy but it does exactly the same. You can easily turn it on and off, you can see the usage and with the schedule and the timer you have a variety of options available to make it act just how you like it.

The option to connect it with Google Assistant is super easy and it works great. Just ask Google to turn on you “Coffee Machine” and it is done! No need for you to take out your smartphone.

With this price tag, I think we have a very good option as the most affordable and well performing smart socket on the market. I’m working on the review of the TP-Link HS110 and the BlitzWolf BW-SHP6, which will come online this year too.
