Sonoff GK-200MP2-B Review – A Cheap Security Solution

You want a safe and secure house. You can get a Ring Video Doorbell, or a security camera to monitor who is visiting. We mostly know the Sonoff brand from smart electronics, but they also released a security camera, the Sonoff GK-200MP2-B. We took and look and made an in-depth review so you can make the right decision.

Conclusion

Sonoff jumped in the security camera market, and they did well. The price, at €50, is great and affordable, normally security cameras are expensive. But there are features missing that I find essential for a security camera. The features that are available, are working well. Even though it is a bit bulky, I like to use the Sonoff GK200MP2-B. It is cheap, widely supported, and it works.

I miss the option of cloud storage. All is stored locally, or to your smartphone, but this must be done manually. I like the option to see and view the data, even if my camera is stolen. The quality of the video is good, as seen in the YouTube video. I recommend this camera for people who are just experimenting with security cameras and if you want to find out if it is something for you. If you are already familiar or want a good set up, I recommend other options, like the TP-Link KC110.

Introduction & Specifications

Sonoff is a relatively known brand when you look for smart electronics. Because they are relatively known, the expectations are also higher. I expect a good working, premium product which just works. Looking at the specs, I have nothing to complain about. Just the size might be a bit too big, and I can not see if cloud storage is offered. Besides that, the specifications look good and I’m excited to test this security camera!

Unboxing

A bit damaged, but the box survived the journey from China. On the front, we see a picture of the Sonoff GK-200MP2-B. On the side and the back, we find more information, like the specifications. There is a lot of information on it. I rather see a more simplistic design, as we see in BlitzWolf products.

Besides the camera, we also get an adapter with the purchase of the Sonoff GK-200MP2-B. This comes in a separate box. Besides the charger, we also get wall-mount equipment to install the camera on the ceiling for example.

Hardware & Design

Man, this thing is huge. The base is wide and the complete set up is just a bit bulky. Hiding this camera is not easy. All the connector types are on the back, like the power, TF card, and the ethernet. When you are rotating the video feed, you just rotate the top part, with the lens. It feels a bit plasticky and cheap, but that is what we expected.

My Sonoff GK-200MP2-B Experience

Normally, Sonoff makes high-quality smart electronics. I ordered this security camera at BangGood, but it was a total let down. The power adapter wouldn’t fit since the port was misaligned. I checked in with BangGood and they, after several emails, refunded me the costs. I brought the Sonoff GK-200MP2-B to my father to see if he wanted to do something with it. We opened up the camera and saw that the Main Logic Board was not properly attached, there was a screw missing. That made the Main Logic Board “move” and misalign the power adapter and ethernet. Well, after fixing that, I thought I had a good working camera, but that was not the case. Rotating to the left, up, and down was fine, but rotating to the right does not work in my camera. Maybe we can fix it by opening again, we will see.

Software

To use the Sonoff GK200MP2-B, you need the eWeLink application. Yet another smarthome application to control your lights, cameras, or other smarthome things. I rather see brands use one application, like Smart Life. They all kind of work the same. In the EweLink application, you can set up different rooms and assigned smart electronics to your living room or bedroom for example.

You have different options when you select the camera. You can set up the Motion Detection, or rotate the view. This is handy if you hang the Sonoff SK200MP2-B to the ceiling. When you click on More Settings, you get to see all the possible options for the security camera. You can see the RTSP server, change the sensitivity of the microphone, the speaker volume, and the Time Zone. You have a wide range of controls over the security camera, which is great to see.

How To Connect?

Pairing the Sonoff GK200MP2-B took me some time. You have to pair it via the sound option and it took me a few minutes to figure this out. When you select the sound option, you hear a lot of beeps from your smartphone. Make sure your volume is set at 10%, otherwise, you will go deaf. It sounds out of this world. Once the Sonoff GK200MP2-B recognizes beeps, it can make the connection. This goes pretty fast, in around 30 seconds you have the Sonoff GK200MP2-B paired. Below is a photo from Sonoff on how to pair:

Video Quality

I’m happy with the quality. The Sonoff GK-200MP2-B supports video up to 1080p, and I like the video quality the security camera produces. You can see the colors, it is sharp, and moving does not make the quality drop that badly. I can keep writing on how I like the quality, but the best judgment is to watch yourself. Here is a YouTube video of the quality of the Sonoff GK-200MP2-B:

Features

Just recording and showing the camera feed in an application is not enough. There are numerous security camera’s out there that offer a wide variety of features. What does the Sonoff GK-200MP2-B have to offer? Are there features missing or is this the camera you need to secure your house?

Save Recording

Unfortunately, the option for cloud storage is missing. This is one of the best features of a security camera if you ask me. When someone breaks in and steals your camera, or your camera breaks down, you still have the footage in the cloud. Now, with the Sonoff GK200MP2-B, you have to save it either to your phone manually, or to the SD card in the Sonoff GK200MP2-B. Hopefully, if Sonoff is going to make more cameras, they will add the cloud storage option.

Motion Detection

This feature is so handy and essential in a security camera if you ask me. I want to know when there is movement in my house, especially the front door. With the Sonoff GK200MP2-B, you can increase or decrease the sensitivity so your cats can freely walk the house without triggering the camera for example.

I’ve had this feature scare me once. I was at an amusement park and my cameras, TP-Links, were notifying me that there was movement. Normally, this is not so bad since we have cats, but this was the camera at the front door! There should be no movement unless it opens. Quickly checking the camera, but there was nothing to be seen. A few minutes later, another notification. I send my parents and the neighbors in for investigation, but it all seemed to be fine. False alarm.

Two-way Audio

This is another essential for a security camera. Luckily, the Sonoff GK200MP2-B offers two-way audio. This means that you can have a conversation via your camera with someone in the room or building that the Sonoff GK200MP2-B is monitoring. When you are outside and you get a motion detection, you can open the camera and have a phone-like conversation.

RTSP

RTSP means Real-Time Streaming Protocol. Basically, this means that you can connect your Sonoff GK200MP2-B to the internet and access it from a browser. You can watch the camera from your work, without opening the application. In the case of the Sonoff GK200MP2-B, you can also connect it to an NVR Recorder (Network Video Recorder) and record your security feed.
