Bakeey Q81 Review – A Lightweight Apple Watch

In the fast-expanding market of smartwatches, Bakeey is trying to make a new for itself too. I’ve personally never heard of them before, but I’m reviewing two models now. Can this relatively unknown brand stand out with it’s cheaply priced smartwatches? Are the features working? We recently had a look at the awful GT08 MTK6261. Hopefully, the Bakeey Q81 will pleasantly surprise me.

Introduction & Specifications

Looking at the specifications of the Bakeey Q81, I must say that I like what I see. The IP rating is excellent, with IP68. For its size, there is a decent-sized battery inside with 190mAh. This should make it a long-lasting smartwatch. Also, the health features (not in the specification sheet) are available, which is a big plus. Let’s dive into this watch and let me tell you more about the health features.

Unboxing

On the front of the box, we find a picture of the Bakeey Q81. It reminds me of the Apple Watch. At the bottom of the box, we find some features, like heart rate measuring, blood pressure, and replaceable dials. On the side of the box, we see the QR code that leads to the Da Fit applications to download.

Inside, we see the Bakeey Q81 right away. The watch is not in the middle, which surprised me (and my OCD). Taking the Bakeey Q81 out, we feel that it is a lightweight watch. Underneath, we find the charging cable and a manual—nothing special or extra, just the basics.

Hardware & Design

The Bakeey Q81 itself is super lightweight. You will barely notice that you have it around your wrist. It is not big or bulky, just right. On the back, we find the charging port, which works with magnetics. This means it is waterproof, which I just love. We also see the heart rate sensor there. It measures your heart rate with only one sensor, which makes it less accurate. If you are looking for a watch with precise heart rate measurements, this might not be the one.

The strap, red in my case, feels good and is very flexible. It is made of TPU, and it is your typical sport strap. With leather straps, it is not recommended to shower with, but with this TPU strap, you can safely take it into the pool or shower. Wash of the sweat after your hard workout. You can easily replace the straps with the pin that holds them. It is a regular pin that you will find on regular watches too. Super easy and available everywhere.

How To Operate?

Controlling the Bakeey Q81 is pretty simple. There is a small circle in the middle below the screen. This is your touch key and makes you control everything. How? Let me explain!

Bakeey Q81 0056

First, if you press it, it will unlock the screen and show the watch faces (which you can pick yourself!) After that, every single click will bring you to the next menu. If you want to enter a menu, for example, the Activity menu, you have to press and hold the button. This will bring you into that menu, and there is a Back menu in there. Instead of a back button, you have to navigate to the Back menu and press and hold again.

It might sound a bit confusing, but it works well. The only downside is that you have to click a lot of times before you are at the menu or activity that you want. Some other watches, like the BlitzWolf BW-HL2 or the Xiaomi Redmi Band, are more convenient when it comes to navigating between the menus.

Battery Life

Inside the Bakeey Q81, we find a 190mAh battery. This might not look like much, but it works well. The Bakeey Q81 lasts around 14 to 17 days on a single charge. The battery life might be lower if you are doing a lot of activities, but for me, this is a high score. Only charging your smartwatch once every two weeks (roughly) is just great, unlike the Apple Watch, where you have to charge it every day or every other day.

Charging the Bakeey Q81 takes around 2 hours, which is something we see more often in smartwatches. Again, that is an acceptable time if you can last at least 14 days on a single charge. You can quickly charge it while you are at a meeting, during dinner, or your afternoon nap.

Software

The app is pretty basic, but it gives you a clear overview of your health and activity. There are only three menus, Today, Device, and Profile. On the first tab, Today, you will see the stats of today. Here you find the taken steps, the slept hours, and the heart rate measurements you did. On the Device tab, you can set the alarm, change the watch faces, or upgrade the Bakeey Q81. In the last tab, Profile, you can set your daily step goal, change your profile settings, and read more about the software and possibly upgrade to be a beta tester. Here are some screenshots of the DA Fit app:

How To Connect?

Connecting the Bakeey Q81 is simple. All you have to do is download and log in to the Da Fit application. Now, just click on Add Device (see screenshot), and it will list the Bakeey Q81 within a second. In my case, the Bakeey Q81 is called Q80. Simply click on it once, and the connection is made within 5 seconds. That’s it! You are good to go now.

Watch Faces

Yes! We have some great news here. Finally, we found a smartwatch that offers a wide variety of watch faces. This is exciting, especially since this is not a known brand like Xiaomi. The Bakeey Q81 offers three default watch faces, but there is an App Store like environment where you can download numerous other watch faces. Just have a look and find the watch faces that fit you or your current outfit.

These are the default watch faces:

Notifications

You can get all your notifications via the Da Fit application. For example, you can get Line, WeChat, KakaoTalk, WhatsApp, and Facebook notifications or turn them off. Those are not all, there are more applications to pick from, and the last option in the Notifications menu is “Others.” When you select this option, ALL other notifications will show on the Bakeey Q81 as well. Super handy if an application you use, like Signal or Telegram, is not listed. Here is how it looks and all the available applications:

Features

Showing notifications, measure your heart rate, track your sleep, and change watch faces. Those are some examples of the features of the Bakeey Q81. Is that all? No! Luckily for you, the Bakeey Q81 has more to offer. It is hard to stand out in the big smartwatch market, but Bakeey at least offers all the needed features to make this is an affordable and feature-rich smartwatch.

Activities

A smartwatch must be able to track your activity, at least. With the Bakeey Q81, you can track multiple of your favorite activities. We have regular walking and running, but also skipping, badminton, and swimming available. And that is not even all. All the activities are listed below. I think that the Bakeey Q81 offers a variety of different activities, but I’m missing the indoor walking and indoor cycling as options. Those are two popular daily activities that I don’t see that often on smartwatches, besides those two, a well set of activities to track.

Here are the available activities on the Bakeey Q81:
Walking, Running, Cycling, Skipping, Badminton, Basketball, Football, and Swimming.

If you are done with your activity, this is how it shows in the Da Fit application:

Sleep Tracking

An essential feature of a smartwatch is health monitoring if you ask me. Sleeping is part of that, and luckily the Bakeey Q81 is tracking your sleep, so you have the insight in your night. Maybe you need some more off-screen time before going to bed, or perhaps you are sleepwalking. With the Bakeey Q81, you get an excellent overview of your night when you wake up.

The Bakeey Q81 tracks a lot. For example, you get to see the restful (deep) sleep, light sleep, REM sleep, and awake time. You see how many minutes you spend in each phase and the overall sleep quality score. What is very helpful to see is that it also shows the heart rate during your sleep. Every 30 minutes, it will measure your heart rate and show it in the application. Maybe you can see if you had a nightmare?

Here is how it is shown in the Da Fit application:

Heart Rate Sensor

During an activity, it is beneficial to see how your heart rate is going up. This profoundly impacts the fat burning process and makes you more healthy. With the Bakeey Q81, you can track your heart rate while you are sitting or sleeping, but also during activities, it will track your heart rate. If you go for an evening walk, your heart rate is measured during that activity. This will reduce battery life but will give you great insights into your performance.

During the night, the Bakeey Q81 will track your heart rate once every 30 minutes. This will also give new insights into how good the quality of your sleep is. If you have a high heart rate, you will wake up feeling tired. Great addition and handy feature of Bakeey. Do keep in mind that the heart rate sensor is an indication. This is not a graded medical device, so that the measurements might be a bit off.

Waterproof

With an IP rating of IP68, you don’t have to worry at all. This means that the Bakeey Q81 is completely water and dustproof. You can safely wear it while taking a shower, jump into the pool, or dive of the boat into the sea. The Bakeey Q81 can handle it all. Just make sure you clean it with fresh water after a dive in the ocean.

Not having to worry about your watch is just great and a must if you ask me. Maybe you are running, and a surprise rainy cloud hits you. Since the Bakeey has an IP rating of IP68, you can safely continue running without damaging your watch. I kept mine on during a cycling activity (heavy sweating) and during the shower after, and it is still working perfectly fine.

Others

Besides the heart rate measuring, the Bakeey Q81 also offers some more health features. It can also measure your Blood Pressure and your Blood Oxygen. This will give you a very rough idea of how those metrics are, as this is not a graded medical device, of course.

You can also use the Bakeey Q81 as a shutter for your smartphone camera. Handy if you want to take a picture you are in yourself.

Conclusions

The Bakeey Q81, a lightweight Apple Watch. It looks kind of the same, but it is not there yet. The software works, but I rather see it get a GUI update. Navigating between the menus is sometimes a bit frustrating since you have to click a lot to get where you want to go. Besides that, the Bakeey Q81 is a really surprising watch!

It is lightweight, which makes it comfortable to wear. You can last at least 14 days on a single charge, which is just great. The Da Fit application is simple, but shows everything that you want and need to see. You can set different watch faces, and download custom made watch faces. That might be the best feature for this watch since you can personalize it even further. A perfect watch with some great features, including health tracking (also though they are not that accurate). They give you an idea of your heart rate or blood pressure, and for this price, that is enough. I recommend this watch if you are new to smartwatches and want to play around with them. Do keep in mind that there are better and more developed models available.
