Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 Review – Pricey, With Limitations, But Worth It.

These are Apple AirPod like earbuds from Xiaomi, the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2. I was looking for a pair of earbuds that are not completely in your ear, as that sometimes is uncomfortable to wear for longer periods of time. After hours of looking online, I came to the conclusion that the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 offers almost anything I want. How good are they? Are they worth the high price tag? Let’s find out!

Introduction & Specifications

I was looking for a pair that were earbuds, so not in-ear or over-ear. I have my Bose QC35, but I was looking for something that I could wear for longer periods of time during hot summer days. Since I do not have an Apple iPhone, I had to look for different products. The OnePlus Buds passed since I returned my OnePlus Nord. Xiaomi offered a nice pair, but they were sold for around 100 euros in the Netherlands. That is expensive. Finally, after a few days, I spotted a discount for the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 and quickly ordered a pair. If we look at the specifications, they are not super special but offer some nice features.

Unboxing

The box of the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 is not that special. At the front, we see a picture of the pair of earbuds with the charging case. On the back, we find the specifications in two languages, including English. On the sides, we find some features, but nothing really special. Inside is also the bare minimum. We find, of course, the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 with the charging case and earbuds. There is a small charging cable and a manual. Nothing more is needed.

Hardware & Design

The Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 looks like the Apple AirPods. Personally, I like this design but I know this is a personal taste. The charging case is a good size, but not as smooth as the Apple AirPods. I like the design and it has more grip to it compared to the Apple AirPods Case. The lid opens easily and has a snappy feeling to it. A great and premium feeling.

The charging port is located at the bottom, which is a bit annoying, as you have to lay it down to charge it. You can not charge it will the charging case stand. A small detail, but maybe they can change that in future models. The button on the side clicks easily and is used to make the connection. This works perfectly as well and has that snappy, crisp, clicking feeling to it.

EarBuds

I reviewed the QCY T9S recently, and they had in-ear plugs. That is great is you want to add Active Noise Cancelation for example, but wearing it for longer periods of time could become annoying. I looked for in-ears and the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 came out on top. The design is great, copied from the Apple AirPods. There is touch control and Environmental Noise Cancelation. I’m really excited about the looks of the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2.

Functions

With wireless earbuds, you miss the functionality of the controller on the cord. Some companies are really good at making everything work with just touch. The Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 are controlled by touch too, but some vital controls are missing… Let’s see what the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 offers and what is missing in my opinion.

Power On/Off

The Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 are both turned on automatically when you take them out of the charging case. We see that in almost all wireless earbuds and that is a lovely feature. No need to press the button or touchpad for seconds to turn it on, take them out, put them in your ear, and within seconds they are connected and ready to go. Super easy!

How To Connect?

Since I’m using a Xiaomi phone, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1, it uses “Quick Connect”. Once you open the lid of the charging case and the earbuds are not connected to any device yet, a pop-up will show on your Xiaomi smartphone if you want to connect the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2. Again, great feature! We see a similar way of connecting the OnePlus Earbuds on the OnePlus Nord.

If you do not own a Xiaomi smartphone, you can go to the Bluetooth settings once you have the earbuds in your ear and look for “Mi True Wireless Earphones 2” and click it to make the connection.

Music Controls

There are limited control possibilities with the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2. You can pause and play your music, and that is it. You can not change the volume or skip a song, unfortunately. I wished Xiaomi made more use of the touchpad in the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2. Now, you can just tap it to pause or play a song and that is it.

Now, there is a sensor in the earbuds which sees if you wear the earbuds. If you take one out of your ear, it will pause the music. That is handy and sometimes faster than slapping the touchpad twice.

How? You have to tap the side of the earbud twice to pause/play a song. You have to do this pretty hard, otherwise, it is not registering the touch. First, I thought it was not working at all, but you have to almost press it like a button before it works. Once you know that, it is easy to control.

Phonecall Controls

With phone calls, it is pretty much the same. You can not mute the call or change the volume. You can only tap the touchpad once and that will answer the call. Simple and I miss some extra controls.

Features

On the specification sheets on various websites, it mentioned that the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 is offering “Active Noise Cancelling”. It is doing something with the outside noises when calling, but I would not refer to it as “Cancelling”. It makes it sound like an alien spacecraft is flying by. Really weird, but it does not work that great. You are able to use your Voice Assistant, which is a great addition.

Battery Life

Can the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 reach the 4 hours advertised working time? I was really curious to see how long these earbuds would last, as these earbuds would be my main wireless pair (if I like them). There is a charging case, which should be able to charge the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 around 3 to 4 times so you should get around 12 to 16 hours of working time with a single charge.

I was able to use the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 for around 3 to 4 hours listening to music on 60%-70% volume. A great result if you ask me! Charging the earbuds can be done using the charging case, and this case is able to charge the earbuds 3 to 4 times. Again, a great result. Charging the earbuds and the charging case takes around 2 hours, using a normal charger. I’m fine with this charging time as you are able to use it for a long time on a single charge.

Noise Cancelling?

When you are not wearing in-ears or over-ears, getting the real noise-canceling feeling is really hard. That goes for the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 as well. When you walk outside, you will hear the cars and all the other noises. The wind will be heard too, which is sometimes a bit annoying. When you are playing music, you can hear everything totally fine and there is no noise there, which is good.

When it comes to phone calls, it is a different story. Xiaomi tried to filter out the passing cars for example, but now they sound like passing alien spacecraft. It gives it a really weird effect and makes it almost funny to listen to if you receive a call from someone with the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2. They need to improve that in the coming versions because it is not working very well.

Sound Quality

Listening to music, a podcast, or doing some meditation. No problem at all for the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2. The quality of the audio is good, but not great. For this price, I actually expected it to be a bit better, but don’t get me wrong, it is not bad. Listening to different genres indoor, and outdoor is totally fine. You have to be very careful about the wind. The Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 catches the wind and makes a big impact on the quality of the sound. A lot of noise is heard then.

Inside, no problem at all! The quality is good and you are not bothered by the noises inside your house. Even though these are earbuds, they close off the environment (inside) pretty well. Outside this is not the case.

Call Qualty

Same as audio quality. Inside calling with the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 is no problem at all. You are able to hear the other person and the other person is able to hear you perfectly fine. It offers “Dual Microphone Noise Reduction”. This should make it very easy to have phone calls outside. I had a phone call outside, next to a road where a few cars passed, and several people asked me if space ships passed me. The noise reduction is converting the sounds of cars to some spacecraft sound. It definitely does something with the outside noises, but not the right thing, which is a shame. Overall, I like to use to have phone calls indoors, and outside when there is no wind or outside noises.

Voice Assistants

Since I’m using Android (Pocophone F1), I get to use the Google Assistant. I’m very happy with that and I use it very often. Luckily, on the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2, you have the ability to use the voice assistant too. How? When you wear both the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 earbuds, you gently tap the left earbud twice. This will activate the Google Assistance for my smartphone. If this works on iOS too, I couldn’t test that. If you know, please send me an email and I will update this review.

Conclusion

The looks, the design, and the functionality, it all sounds great. There are some limitations to the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2. Calling outside is not the best and the Environmental Noise Cancellation does something, but not what it is supposed to do. It makes the cars sound like space crafts flying by. Very annoying for the other person on the phone. Also, the wind is heard very badly when making a call outside.

Besides that, the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 works great. Inside calling is working perfectly fine, the quality of the sound is good, and the battery is performing well too. You can charge the earbuds 3 to 4 times with the charging case, which means you only need to charge the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2 once every 4 to 6 days (depending on the usage of course). Really happy with that.

The in-ear design is great for me, as it does not put pressure on my inner ear canal. The touch control is limited, but it covers the basics. Hopefully, Xiaomi will add more touch controls in future models. For now, I recommend the Xiaomi Mi AirDots Pro 2, as long as you are aware of the limitations. I use them now as my daily pair of earbuds.
